There's a mix of opinions among clinical pharmacists about whether or not NPs should be able to prescribe. Some support the NPs because they feel that they are prudent, careful prescribers - and they sell pharmaceuticals, which helps our bottom line. Others feel that pharmacists should be able to prescribe and see the NPs as competitors. Did you know that pharmacy has proposed a prescriptive authority bill of its own? It failed once a few years ago, but we're considering another go at it. This is a very tough state. Maybe it would be worthwhile for us to have a joint meeting to discuss the issue. Send me some background information and I'lll propose it to our leadership.

Pharmacists are integral to prescriptive authority and many of them feel that they too should be able to prescribe. It will be very important to know the position that the pharmacists might take on this bill. Will they collaborate or be hostile to the legislation? It will also be important to ensure that the pharmacy group understands the education and practice of NPs and the pitfalls encountered when they have to prescribe through a physician. If the pharmacists don’t understand the depth of the problem, they cannot offer support. It will be important to talk with both the state level organization and local pharmacists who are in practice.
